This month the Ontario government announced it would be raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour. A reversal of the decision to cancel the minimum wage increase when they came into power four years ago.
As the Ontario economy recovers from COVID-19 the question of why now, and whether or not this is too little too late permeates the discussion. Some who are saying this doesn't go far enough are the people at Ontario Living Wage Network. They released their numbers for what the living wage in the province and the 905 should be, and the proposed minimum wage increase falls far short.
We invited Craig Pickthorne from the network to discuss the need for a living wage and why it's important to consider it now.
